Spher: safety tools and community for women
Spher combines SOS alerts to chosen contacts, live location, audio recording, a community Safety Map and groups for women. Its core safety and community features are free. Spher is listed for iPhone and Android; the current iPhone listing requires iOS 26 or later. Regional and feature availability can vary. It alerts chosen contacts and does not provide professional emergency dispatch.
The response model is contact-based. An alert informs the contacts selected by the user and can share live location with them. Spher does not provide professional emergency dispatch and does not replace local emergency services.
The community layer distinguishes Spher from general map tools. The same app includes groups, conversations and shared local context, so its purpose extends beyond emergency moments.

Life360: family location sharing
Life360’s basic membership is free. Its current location-sharing page lists two days of location history and two Place Alerts in the free plan. Temporary location sharing can also use a browser link for someone who does not have the app.
The free tier includes SOS alerts: Circle members receive an app notification, and emergency contacts receive text alerts according to Life360’s support documentation. Professional emergency dispatch is a separate feature for eligible paid memberships in supported countries. Contact alerts and a staffed dispatch service are different forms of response.

Apple Find My: built into the Apple ecosystem
Apple Find My supports location sharing with selected people. Apple’s current iPhone guide states that the person sharing can choose how long the sharing lasts, stop sharing with one person or hide the location from everyone.
Find My also covers Apple device and item recovery. It does not provide Spher’s trusted-circle alert flow or women-first communities, and its strongest integration remains within Apple’s ecosystem.

Google Maps: temporary cross-platform sharing
Google Maps supports real-time location sharing between people using iPhone and Android. The sharing period is selected by the person sharing. Google states that recipients may also see profile and device information such as the recent device location and battery status.
Google Maps provides location and route context rather than a dedicated safety-response system. It has no women-first community or trusted-circle alert model.

Google Personal Safety: emergency tools on supported phones
Google’s Personal Safety app is available on Pixel phones and some other Android phones. Pixel Emergency SOS is available on Pixel 4a and later, including Fold. Depending on setup, it can start an emergency call, share information with emergency contacts and record emergency video. Emergency Sharing and Safety Check have their own availability requirements.
Google states that Pixel Emergency SOS does not work in airplane mode or with Battery Saver enabled. Emergency Sharing requires an emergency contact, location permission, internet access and Location Services. These are function-specific conditions, not one universal rule for every Android phone or emergency feature.

What “free” means across these apps
A free download does not mean that every function, unlimited history or professional response is included. It also does not mean that every feature is available in every country. Life360 offers paid membership tiers. Google Personal Safety depends on supported hardware and regions. Find My and Google Maps focus mainly on location sharing rather than a full contact-alert workflow.
The biggest distinction is who receives information after an action. Spher and Life360 provide contact alerts. Google Personal Safety can contact emergency services in supported configurations.
